My advent 8111 laptop works when on mains charge, but if i fit the battery it cuts out.?

I thought I had fused the battery but bought new one and fitted and does the same thing. So can only use lap top with mains charger and no battery fitted. Cant even charge the battery up. Can the laptop be fixed or is it not worth it? Cheers.
