They are asking me to pay on a debt that is 11 years old (but I paid off that card when I closed it in 1998)?

I believe the SOL is 7 years. Call up a local attorney and ask them, it won't cost you anything to ask. You shouldn't be expected to have that kind of information from 11 years ago! My goodness, if I were you I would call the company back and tell them that you are disputing the charge and would like a copy of all information they have. They might have the wrong person, who knows. All I know is there is no way I would pay for an 11 year old debt that I already paid once.
