Trying to care for this little bonsai tree?

I would like to find a web site to help me find out the type (poss fig?)and help me get it healthy and to care for it. I bought a book but it doesn't have very much in it about spider mites (which I know it has). I am doing my best but would like some additional info. The gravel on the soil around it is hard like they applied a crust, is that normal? I am keeping inside now as it is too cold outside.
